Albemarle is a town of water, air, land, and opportunity.

Within an hour of Charlotte and an easy drive from Salisbury, Asheboro, and the Piedmont Triad region, Albemarle, NC is a welcome escape to live, work, and play. Located alongside a state park, national forest, and several popular bodies of water, the town is a popular destination for outdoor activities. And recent revitalization projects downtown have supported abundant artistic creativity, culture, thriving small businesses, and dining opportunities.

As the seat of Stanly County, Albemarle offers many amenities within the town or within minutes, including public and private schools; an extensive county library system; access to state-of-the-art medical facilities, including Atrium Health Stanly; and locally owned shopping, entertainment, and dining options. Despite its rich amenities, new and existing homes in town remain affordable, with a large percentage of options still under $350,000. Several new subdivisions are scheduled for development in the near future, adding to the town’s housing choices. Luxury homes and acreage are available primarily outside Albemarle city limits.

Lifestyle and Attractions

Albemarle’s thriving businesses and friendly neighborhoods are centered around the heart of town. Downtown’s streetscape masterplan has recently given new life to navigational signage, banners on light poles, outdoor furnishings, and other beautifications. A new public gathering space called Courthouse Plaza offers a pedestrian plaza with lighting, public art, and more.

Locals and visitors alike appreciate Albemarle’s proximity to the beautiful Uwharrie Lakes region of the state. In fact, the town center is just minutes away from Morrow Mountain State Park, Uwharrie National Forest, Badin Lake, Lake Tillery, and the Uwharrie River Public Fishing Area off of the Pee Dee River. Abundant outdoor activities throughout the area include boating, camping, fishing, hiking, and swimming.

Nearby Schools and Higher Education

Children can easily complete their primary education without leaving town. East Albemarle Elementary, Albemarle Middle, and Albemarle High School serve as the core school options for students in town. Additional public and private school options, as well as head start programs and learning academies are also available. 

Stanly Community College (SCC), located in town, is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The college serves over 10,000 students annually in = associate, diploma, certificate, general education, occupational training, adult literacy, and comprehensive online degree programs.

History

Town history reports that Albemarle was named after General George Monck, the first Duke of Albemarle and one of the original proprietors of the colony of Carolina. Large-scale European settlement of the region happened in the mid-18th century. Located off the Old Stage Road connecting Charlotte and Raleigh, the settlement emerged as an important hub for regional commerce and trade. Early economic growth was also fueled by agriculture (primarily cotton farming) and a short-lived gold rush in the nearby Uwharrie Mountains before textile manufacturing became the primary economic driver. Albemarle remained largely a textile town till the 1980s–1990s, when the community’s economy became more diversified.

Albemarle was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a National Main Street City in 1993. Today, Albemarle is undertaking a vibrant downtown revitalization. Several historic-preservation and adaptive-reuse projects have been completed, with several more on the way.
